– Is your business an asset or is it a full-time, high-paying job?
When I first started my business, I thought that I had to wake up every day and do all of this work, grind, and make sure that I’m pushing the ball forward and make sure that everything’s being done. And I went to go hire my first really big contractor to come in and handle a lot of stuff that I was doing on a daily basis, and I couldn’t get past the mindset shift that I was facing, which was, well, if I hire someone to do for me what it is that I wake up every day and do, well then, what am I going to have to do on a daily basis? Does that mean that my value in the company is no longer there? And I had a call with a friend and he pretty much explained to me that I was looking at my business as a full-time job. It was a high-paying, full-time job that I had to wake up every day and get to work in. And that meant that if I wanted to take a vacation or some time off or just go for a walk or do whatever, anything outside of the business, that the business wasn’t really being pushed forward. And that was a real shift for me.
So I want to challenge you to ask yourself the same question. Is my business an asset that’s working for me, that’s constantly, whether I’m on vacation, whether I’m sleeping, whether I’m just out with some friends or with my family, is it constantly working for me? Or does it only work when I show up and get to work?
Now, that’s not saying that you can’t show up and provide value, and find joy, fulfillment in what it is that you’re doing. I hope that you are doing that, but it shouldn’t be the only driver of the business. The business should be running on autopilot for you and then when you step in, it’s like you stepping on the gas or taking the autopilot off to accelerate the growth.
