What Makes Your Heart Sing?
Don't you just hate small talk?
You know those surface talks like the weather, and other things you really don’t care about. This is one of the reasons why sometimes I don’t like meeting new people.
So how can you breakthrough immediately when you meet somebody to make a connection with them and find out who they are and what they’re all about?
I found that asking this question does the trick!

Hey everyone.
This is a different type of live stream as I’m in the back of an Uber right now. I’m on my way to a friend’s five-year business anniversary party where we’re gonna celebrate her five-year work anniversary from when she started her business, and I think Catherine’s gonna be there this evening.
I’m looking forward to seeing her but while I’m there I’m also going to be seeing and meeting a lot of people who I’ve never met before, and sometimes that makes people nervous, sometimes it makes people uneasy.
I especially don’t like meeting new people, and talking about surface-level stuff. I wanna get deep into why someone ticks, what makes then unique, what passions they have in life, and things along those lines rather than talking about weather or sports or things that I really don’t care about, and I know a lot of people feel the same way as well.
So, I was having a couple dialogs with some friends, like how can we break through immediately when we meet somebody to make a connection with them, to find out who they are and what they’re all about and what really drives them and motivates them and what they really care about?
And my favorite question to ask somebody when I first meet them is what makes your heart sing? And I found that it’s actually very receptive. People are very receptive to asking or for me to ask them that question.
And what I find is they’re thrilled and happy to answer that question and I found that I’ve actually enjoyed the answers because they’re thought out, they’re meaningful, they actually find out why people do what they do, why they are who they are, and what makes them extremely unique and what makes them who they are.
So, when you’re going to be meeting a bunch of new people, it’s wedding season right now, this is a great opening question to ask people that you meet a wedding what makes your heart sing, and I remember, I think it was two years ago I asked this question at a wedding. I had no idea who this person was and she was so quick to answer, she goes cheeseburgers.
I’m like you know what? I like that answer. That’s such a good answer right there, so then you know, it just broke the ice a little bit and then we were talking and we made it a fun night but what you find is sometimes actually people will stop and think about what really makes their heart sing.
Sometimes it’s travel, sometimes it’s freedom, sometimes it’s joy, sometimes it’s their work that they’re passionate about, maybe it’s their side project, maybe it’s their pets that they have, and then you don’t go through the whole cycle and the hamster wheel that we normally go through, hey, how are you? My name’s so and so. What do you do?
Because what people do for work really may not be what makes their heart sing or what they find enjoyment in and I wanna make it the new default.
Rather than what do you do? I’d like to change it to what makes your heart sing? So, thanks for joining me in the back of this Uber as I’m on the way to this shindig. It should be fun and let me know what you think.
If you like this video please share it and give me some hearts, give me some love and I would say that I’m sticking around to answer any comments or questions or continue the dialog but I’m gonna go make some connections this evening.
So, I hope you all have a wonderful Friday evening and I will see you soon.
Bye.
